ROTTERDAM, 2 juli 2008 - From the beginning of the first keynote and through the sessions that followed it became clear that EMC is laying down the building blocks for the future of information management. Information is growing at an incredible pace. At the beginning of the conference, 172 exabytes of digital information was contained in the world’s repositories. Since the conference, this number has continued to explode. You can watch this explosion of information in action on our website.

The challenge this presents is clear. What is also clear is that EMC has been laying the groundwork to meet it. One example is the acquisition of the Dutch company X-Hive. The acquisition brings a XML repository to Documentum, and a place for the ever-growing body of information. More on that in some of the technical viewpoints.

LAS VEGAS, 22 mei 2008 - Wat duidelijk is geworden na het bezoek aan EMC World 2008 is dat EMC met Documentum er naar streeft om binnen een platform content in de breedste zin te gaan beheren. Het gaat hier niet meer om documenten, webpagina's, multimedia-bestanden of e-mails maar om alle content die van belang is bij de communicatie tussen mensen. Denk hierbij aan wiki's, blogs, RSS-feeds maar ook aan instant messaging en social computing informatie. Zelfs het opslaan van 'structured data' staat op de agenda. De grote kracht van het managen van al deze informatie ligt besloten in de de mogelijkheden die het combineren ervan oplevert ('mashups').

LAS VEGAS, 20 mei 2008 - Mark Lewis and Whitney Tidmarsh paired up once again to deliver what I consider to be one of the more exiting keynotes in recent years. Despite the fact that no major products were launched at this venue, the progress demonstrated in enhancing existing applications and integrating recent acquisitions (Document Sciences, XHive) into what Mark Lewis terms a 'Web 2.0 user experience' are in an advanced stage of realization, with impressive strides being made towards a more user-centric, maintenance-friendly and versatile ECM platform that clearly aims to give Microsoft Sharepoint a run for its money.

LAS VEGAS, 23 mei 2008 - Tijdens EMC World 2008 werd duidelijk dat Composer vanaf Documentum pas vanaf versie 6.5 echt wordt gelanceerd als de standaard ontwikkelomgeving voor Documentum. Enigszins vreemd, aangezien Composer al vanaf Documentum 6.0 op de markt is. In de praktijk is echter gebleken dat er in Composer 6.0 nog een behoorlijk aantal features niet volledig werken. Op basis van wat er tijdens EMC World 2008 is getoond, is er voldoende reden om aan te nemen dat Documentum Composer vanaf versie 6.5 wel de volledige functionaliteit implementeert.

LAS VEGAS, 24 mei 2008 - EMC World 2008 was dit jaar in Las Vegas, Nevada, de hoofdstad van nep, namaak en veel, heel veel geld. Zou dat een voorteken zijn, want wat zou EMC nu nog kunnen bieden, nadat ze vorig jaar al de Documentum user interface met zulke grote sprongen vooruit hadden geholpen en met de introductie van het standaards- en configuratie-vriendelijke TaskSpace de concurrentie ver achter zich hadden gelaten? Zou het een week van pracht en praal en veel nepperij worden, of hadden ze ook dit jaar weer wat moois in petto? Het antwoord kan kort en krachtig zijn:  'The Knowledge Worker': de nieuwe user interface als vervanging van eRoom en Webtop. Qua look en feel volledig state-of-the-art, volledig 'Web 2.0' en van alle leuke toeters en bellen voorzien. Dus ja, het is ze weer gelukt.
